On McKinney Music, “the best independent music magazine in the UK“, Shawn Williams releases her new album, “Sulking In Love” next month, and is getting ready to embark on a tour to promote the new music on the Gulf Coast of the United States.

“Sulking In Love”

Shawn Williams will release her fifth studio album, “Sulking In Love,” on April 21. Mark Howard, who has worked with Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Lucinda Williams, U2, and other artists, produced the record. The album will feature amazing artists like Michael Chaves (guitar – Marianne Faithfull, Leonard Cohen), The Neville Brothers’ bassist Daryl Johnson and Omari Neville on drums. It is a collection of songs that seamlessly blend genres from a variety of musical styles.

Shawn Williams’ music is as diverse and hauntingly soulful as her hometown, New Orleans, which is a melting pot. She refers to it as “alt-rock-country billy, serial killer blues,” creating an atmospheric sound that mixes dynamic guitars, truth-focused verses, and moody arrangements, into her kind of American noir. She noted that she has always been drawn to dark themes, saying it could be a result of being in New Orleans, perhaps coming from her love of the desert. It just comes from somewhere else and flows out of her.

The Dark Themes of New Orleans

Shawn Williams defies classification by showing her broken heart. Williams sings each song with a voice flecked with both the twang of alt-country and the pissed-off power of alt-rock. The album’s full-throttle highs and lonely lows mirror the roller coaster ride of heartbreak itself. She finds a home there, in the gray area between genres, establishing her identity in a space that is both influenced by her predecessors and still uniquely hers. Yes, there is darkness at that street’s end. But there’s also melody, guitar-driven strength, and the sharp insights of a songwriter who, like her hometown of New Orleans, doesn’t shy away from the wild thrills and dangerous possibilities that come with living life after sunset.
